Facebook staff have come out to the public multiple times saying that there would not be a "dislike" button added to the popular social networking site. On Monday, a computer security firm called Sophos warned about a Facebook scam with a fake "dislike" button that can place malicious software onto machines.
These hackers are getting Facebook users to install an app that says it provides a "dislike" button. Once a user grants access to their profile, the application generates spam and send invites to all the person's friends to spread the app. The app will post on the news feed with something similar to:
"I just got the Dislike button, so now I can dislike all of your dumb posts lol!!"
Or
"Get the official DISLIKE button NOW!"
And both of those versions are followed by a link where you can download the fake app.
The original "like" button didn't need an app to install, so why would a similar "dislike" button need one? So that should have been a red flag in the beginning. Other scams have been going around to Facebook users such as when a user posts something in the news feed "via" some other site. Sometimes the site that follows "via" will automatically take you to an app installation page, so be careful what you click on.
A huge red flag is when any app installations try to take you to an external site. The "dislike" button was taking users to fbdislikeit.info. You should never install anything from an external site.
