Social Media: King of the World? Pretty Much.

Social media has officially taken over the world. If you didn’t already know that though, where have you been?

Social networking started to develop in the mid 1990s with sites such as geocities and tripod. Back then with sites such as classmates.com people were able to connect with others through their email accounts by being part of these sites. It wasn’t until the late 90s that some of these sites started creating “user profiles” as part of their memberships.

By the early 2000’s social media began to make a name for itself with Friendster, and Myspace followed shortly after. It is said that by 2005 Myspace was getting more page views than Google itself, rocketing social media into the Internet mainstream.

Facebook emerged in 2004 with a vengeance, and has since taken the throne of the largest social networking site in the world. Along with Facebook, today there are now more than 200 sites with the purpose of social networking.

Facebook continues to grow their site, adding new users, and updating the site daily. There are more than 400 million users throughout the world. Just today in an article posted to Yahoo! by AFP, a poll taken shows that many young women between the ages of 18-34 check their Facebook first thing in the morning, even before they go to the bathroom or brush their teeth. People tend to be glued to their profiles. Work environments and even some schools have banned Facebook for being distracting. That’s just crazy.

Along with being blocked from some work places and educational institutes, Facebook has been blocked by a few countries including Pakistan, Syria, China, Vietnam and Iraq after meeting controversy.

And if you can’t get enough of Facebook, there is a movie that will open at this fall’s New York Film Festival about the founding of the social media king. The movie is entitled “The Social Network.”

But seriously, the world today is run by social media. It isn’t possible to see a movie without the previews advertising to their Facebook fan page. All the celebrities are getting more fame through their social networking sites by reaching directly to their fans. People are getting jobs through sites such as LinkedIn.

It is amazing how quickly social media took a rise to front and center stage. But it certainly is staying in the spotlight.

Oops gotta go, time to Facebook and Tweet about this blog!
