Microsoft has released a free version of their Enterprise Search Server called MS Search Server 2008 Express. This software runs locally on your server and searches and indexes your local content.
Searches are performed using a familiar web interface and numerous types of files and content can be included within the search index. A nice feature is that MS Exchange Public Folder content can be indexed out of the box without a third party addition.
